Gareth Thomas - Game Designer
Hello, and welcome to my site.
For a long time, I’ve been fascinated with video games, and I’ve long desired to pursue a career designing them.
The roots of this come in the form of mod work for an older game. I started learning about designing maps and gameplay changes for 2004’s Star Wars: Battlefront (Pandemic Studios, published by LucasArts). Many such modifications have been made for its sequel, but far fewer existed for the original game, and so, seeing a niche, I decided to fill it. Because of the age of the game, I had to design around the limitations of the engine, but this proved to be a fun challenge for both my gameplay overhauls and my custom maps.
In 2018, I was accepted into the BSc (Hons) Games Technology degree at the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham, Surrey. Unfortunately, due to very low response numbers, the degree was cancelled that year, but I was instead offered a place on the BA (Hons) Games Arts course. Followjng the conclusion of my Batchelors, I contemplated my next steps, and finally decided in 2023 to apply for the MA Games Design degree in the same university I took my Batchelor’s. During the course of the degree, I came to grips with the impressive power of Unreal Engine 5.
I love designing levels and gameplay, and I’m always learning new systems and techniques. Now I look to taking my first steps out of academia and into the wider games industry.
